Meditation has surged in popularity in the last few years. Physical therapists, counselors, and teachers even started using meditation techniques to help their patients and students. But what exactly is meditation? It’s not just sitting on the floor with your eyes closed, and it’s definitely not an excuse to take a nap in the middle of your day.
Meditation is an act of intentionally employing your attention in different ways to create internal balance. Meditation balances your brain and body in the same way a scuba diver equalizes the pressure in their masks as they dive deeper. It’s nothing more than intentionally going inside your own mind and giving yourself the gift of awareness for what’s inside of you.
In Jason Forrest‘s latest book, The Mindset of a Sales Warrior, he dives deeper into this idea. If you visit our book site, you can also receive access to custom meditations designed to improve your performance and set you up for personal and professional success.
Dr. Joe Dispenza is an award-winning researcher who’s spent his life teaching others how to rewire their brains and completely change their reality. In his book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, he said this about meditation: “Meditating is a means for you to move beyond your analytical mind so that you can access your subconscious mind. That’s crucial since the subconscious is where all your bad habits and behaviors that you want to change reside.”
Sometimes our deepest fear in meditation isn’t the practice itself, but what we’ll find when we do go inside. Our own thoughts can be our worst enemy. I used to blast music through my headphones, not because I loved the music, but because I wanted to escape my own thoughts. Meditation changed everything for me. I no longer had to drown out the thoughts inside my head because meditation cleared the clutter out of my brain. Now I was engaging with my thoughts, or disarming them, but never running from them.
Your conscious mind is stuffed with everything inside your awareness. It’s filled to the brim with every sensation, perception, memory, feeling, and fantasy you’ve ever accumulated over time. We all know psychologist Sigmund Freud had some pretty wild theories, but his explanation of the conscious mind is the best way to understand what it truly is. He explained that your personality is like an iceberg, and the tip of the iceberg above the water represents your conscious mind. Beneath the water’s surface is where the bulk of the iceberg hides, and that represents your subconscious mind.
Simply put, the things that are hidden from your awareness exert the greatest influence over your personalities and behaviors.
Meditation is the key to unlocking your subconscious mind so you can fully embody who you are. That’s why it’s one of the first things I do in my morning ritual every day when I wake up. I have to connect with myself to know that I can make the most of each day. Otherwise, I’m being pulled in many different directions by forces outside my control.
The scientific benefits of meditation are undeniable. It helps your brain to sharpen your attention span, increases your resiliency to stress, increases compassion, and even has a positive impact on your physical health. The more consistently I meditate, the more centered and healthy I become.
All of these things help with your sales career. Meditating has been scientifically proven by the US National Library of Medicine to improve your ability to make decisions. It rewires your brain to improve the functioning of your brain’s decision-making centers by cutting out the bombarding noise of daily life. It also improves your memory, allowing you to store and utilize more information – like what you’re learning in this book.
As you already know, people naturally run off their programming. Your programming may tell you that if a prospect is frowning and crossing their arms, they’re not interested in buying. When you just give in to this kind of programming, your brain is doing everything it can to make it come true. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that you tell yourself over, and over, and over again.
Whatever programming, negative beliefs, or fears that you have around yourself or your role as a salesperson, meditation allows you to unlock the truth in your subconscious. This incredible tool will help you detach from your conscious mind and dive into the truth of any situation, feeling, or belief that you experience.
By making this a regular practice, you’ll notice not just your emotional wellbeing increase, but you’ll see physical benefits too in the form of decreased stress and anxiety and increased confidence.
Life will throw giant waves at your metaphorical boat. You already know that. The salespeople who don’t make it are the ones who aren’t self-aware enough to notice the change in the weather. The purpose of meditation is to give yourself time to quiet those waves so you can get your Sales Warrior mind in order. It’s to shut out the storm for a minute, stabilize yourself on solid ground, and rejoin the world stronger and more prepared.
